Written By Unknown on Saturday, June 29, 2013 | 4:55 AM

Before joining National Commission for UNESCO of the United Republic of Tanzania, Mrs. Mwinula used to be a teacher at Zanaki Secondary School. She started working with the Commission for UNESCO in 1996 as an Assistant Programme Officer for Information and Communication dealing specifically with editing of the UNESCO Courier magazine.
UNESCO Courier (Mjumbe wa UNESCO) is a publication of UNESCO which is distributed to stakeholders around the world through the UNESCO National Commission in order to sensitize them about UNESCO activities. The Commission used to translate the Courier magazine into Swahili language for the same purpose. In 2002, Mrs. Mwinula became the National Coordinator for UNESCO Associated Schools Project network in Tanzania (ASP net) which involves students from Primary, Secondary and Teachers Training Colleges in UNESCO activities. A year later she became the Coordinator of the Social and Human Science Programme of the Commission until her retirement in May 2012.

CAREER ACHIEVEMENT

Mrs. Mwinula can be described as a heroine because of her own tremendous story about educational career. Though she was raised by uneducated parents who did not value girls’ education, she worked through her education against all odds to graduate with a Masters degree.  Mrs. Mwinula did not go through her education the ordinary way, she completed standard seven but through the non formal school system she managed to complete ordinary and advanced levels as a private candidate, and qualified to join the University of Dar es Salaam in 1987. She got her first degree in Education in 1991.  Two years later, Mrs. Mwinula joined the University of Leeds to pursue a Masters in Education Management. In 2005, she got an opportunity through UNESCO to pursue another Masters degree in Human Rights Education at Manchester University in the United Kingdom. Mrs. Mwinula considers all these as the greatest achievement in her entire life.

Until her retirement, Mrs. Mwinula had worked for the government for forty two years out of which sixteen years; she was with the National Commission.  During this period she has made great contribution to the Commission in general and to the public in particular. Among the great contributions to which the Commission will always be proud of, is her tireless efforts in the actual implementation of Act No. 7 of 2008 which led to the formation of autonomous UNESCO National Commission of the United Republic of Tanzania. Apart from this great achievement, Mrs. Mwinula has been actively working as a Budget Officer at the Commission for more than ten years. As a Programme Officer for Social and Human Science, she managed to coordinate ASP net activities within the country and was able to connect several UNESCO ASPnet schools in Tanzania with other schools abroad for the purpose of educational exchange and intercultural learning. The partnerships exist between some schools in Tanzania and schools in Finland, German and Switzerland. She was also coordinating gender and youth activities within the country and managed to establish the UNESCO Youth Desk at the Commission.

The Farewell Dinner

In appreciation of her distinguished service with the Commission and the public, the management and staff of UNESCO National Commission organized a farewell dinner in honour of Mrs. Mwinula at Peacock hotel.  During her farewell speech, Mrs. Mwinula emphasized   on three key issues; importance of maintaining team works, working under minimum supervision and commitment to organizations’ objectives.
