The International year of
Chemistry was proclaimed by UNESCO in 2010 in order to sensitize young people
to undertake chemistry related scientific careers in their future. The
International year of chemistry was also aimed at inspiring young girls to opt
for scientific careers especial those which are chemistry related.
In Tanzania the International
year of chemistry was marked on 26th May 2011 by the National
Commission for UNESCO at the Diamond Jubilee Hall. This event mobilized
different scholars in scientific fields from different institute of educations.
The students of ASP net from different schools in Tanzania participated fully
in this special event in the world of science by showing the chemical
exhibitions. Among the ASP net schools participated in the International Year
of Chemistry celebration include Kiluvya, Zanaki, Jangwani, Shaaabani Robert,
Azania secondary schools in Tanzania. The theme of International Year of
Chemistry was “CHEMISTRY OUR LIFE, OUR FUTURE”
The guest of honour in the International Year of Chemistry was Prof. Makame Mbawara, the minister for science and Information communication in Tanzania. The guest of honour Prof. Makame demonstrated the chemical experiment before the audience to prove that chemistry is important in life and that young people must opt for it. However in her opening remarks Prof. Elizabeth Kiondo the executive secretary of National Commission for UNESCO in Tanzania said that, she cannot imagine life without TV, computers, Air conditions in cars and at homes, the beverages and many other things but all these things apply the knowledge of chemistry in their manufacturing, therefore chemistry is life, and she addressed the audience.

Titrations by just using hibiscus flowers and cassava extract instead of using
the industrial chemical indicators of Methelene orange and POP to the minister
of science and information and communication Prof. Mbawara.
